PURPOSE

The primary focus of this activity is to compare the recorded and performed processes against a reference model such as CMMI. Appraisal’s typically include identifying well performed processes, gaps in processes, identifying recurring problems etc. Appraisal results should include enough detail so that they can be used for improvements. This activity differs from PPQA in that the quality assurance function focuses on the practiced processes versus the recorded processes.

WHEN

Changes to best practice model or new model has been selected by the senior management.

PARTICIPATING ROLES

ENTRY CRITERIA

Organizational business objectives and key results have been published.

SUB-ACTIVITIES

  1. Determine Appraisal Type.

    • Discuss with senior management any changes to appraisal model or whether any additional appraisal model types are desired.
  2. Define Appraisal Scope.

    • Determine the appraisal scope:

      • Organizational project sample
      • Model or best practice areas
      • Processes
  3. Create Initial Plan and Schedule.

    • Based on appraisal type and scope create appropriate epic and feature work items within Azure DevOps.
    • Determine major milestones required to meet any certification deadlines.
  4. Form Appraisal Team Members.

    • Based on appraisal type and scope determine team members to assist with appraisal. Consider the following:

      • Knowledge and skills
      • Domain expertise
      • Project commitments
  5. Appraise Organization.

    • Using the CMMI Model Viewer as a reference, apprise organizational process for best practice gaps, identify any strengths and weaknesses.
    • Determine overall rating based on appropriate criteria and document findings within PIID.
    • Work with appraisal team for consensus on results.

EXIT CRITERIA

Organizational strengths and weaknesses have been identified and documented within PIID and an assessment rating has been provided.
